History of Italian owned wineries
Italian immigrants were attracted to the region after the first and second world wars. They started making wines like they had back home to enjoy with family and friends. Demand for their wines saw their passion evolve into thriving businesses, some which are now the largest family owned wine companies in Australia today.

Come and visit the Riverina’s first winery which has reopened in August 2023. The McWilliams pioneered the wine region back in 1913 when John James (J.J.) McWilliam brought vine cuttings to the area and established the Hanwood site. A statue of J.J. takes pride of place at the front of the cellar door in honour of his vision and hard work.
